Atomic 4 thermostat - Early Model

Is the A4 thermostat an OEM part? If so, does anyone know the part number? Google has let me down on this one.

I am sure it is but I don't know the part number to ask for. I meant to do some A4 parts research but I haven't had enough leisure time to encourage me.

do you have the old one? Thermostats are a fairly generic deal. Diameter, depth, temperature. Walk the old one up to the counter at a non-bigbox parts store and you should be able to walk out with a replacement.

Don and Brenda Moyer are fine folks. Its nice to have the A4 guru in your backyard. I've been to a couple of their workshops, nicely done and well worth the $$.

My manual drowned the last time the thugs cut the boat loose.:-( Gotta get that replaced!

Thanks all. Welcome back Rachel - good to see your input here. Of course, I'd like to know what you edited out.

Ken and I get along - he was a big help when I was having ignition problems. I know I could order the parts from Moyer, but they only ship UPS. For me, that's a problem. Plus, I am terribly impatient when I want or need boat stuff. It's hard on the wallet, but I'll pay a premium for instant gratification.

I changed the oil and the fuel filter today - I wanted to do more, but that's all I could do (that I haven't just done recently) with the parts aboard. I even went to Boater's World looking for A4 stuff just to tinker. I hate that place, though, and every time I do end up there I swear it's the last time.

I suppose I'll end up ordering from Moyer on Monday, I need to order some other stuff anyway (raw water filter and a few impellers).

Thanks for the "Welcome back," Jason. Sure is good to see that you and #218 are up and running -- and in New Orleans even. Yay!

I was just blathering in my post above - and about late model A-4s at that. I checked the Moyer link that Figment posted (before me) and it had what I was talking about anyway, in better detail, which was how the early thermostat was quite expensive, but how Moyer had come up with a housing that cost about the same, but would then allow you to use a cheap, everyday thermostat from then on out.

Of course you had asked about the early model, so why did I even type that? So glad to be back I just had to write I guess :-) I've been watching the head mechanic at the yard where I work rebuild an A-4 and it's *almost* got me in the mood to have an inboard myself :-) 'Course he's doing the work on a nice, waist-high bench, not in contortions halfway in the bilge, but still.

Again, so great to see you and the-Triton-with-the-will-to-live out cruising around :-)

One nice thing about tritons and A4s is that after you've done it once, you realize that pulling the engine is not such a heroic evolution. With that in mind you start to treat it like an outboard....
For anything other than basic tuneups or diagnostics, yank it out and do the work on a bench like a normal human being. Saves knuckleskin and sanity.
