Islander 29 info

Post by Peter »

I'm looking for info on the Islander 29 (around 1968-1970). Sail plan, reviews, boat quality, rumors, opinions, ... anything would be interesting. The only site I've been able to find so far is at
http://www.islandersailboats.com/DesktopDefault.aspx

The reason for this quest is an Islander 29 for sale locally that, although a 'little' bit high priced, might be worth a look. See it at
http://velayachtsales.com/core/listing/ ... achtsintl&
Thanks!
Peter

Islanders had moments of questionable quality, not unlike most manufacturers, but this does not mean that all are bad. Things were worse in the mid and late 70s.

That's a very well-equipped boat in the brokerage ad. (And I've never seen an ad with so many photos before...). If she interests you, by all means take a look. Ensure a thorough inspection of the hull and deck, as with all boats. Look at the hidden construction details to get a better idea as to the build quality of this one particular boat.

Post by Zen »

Another late comment, but just for the record. I LOVE my I-29 as did EVERYONE i spoke with who owned one, before I purcahse mine.

Oh I just checked that boat site and see you did not buy it. I spoke with the folks who did, a while back and they love it!

Yup ... I bought the Vega ... and I still have the San Juan 24.
The Islander I looked at had been very much customized. Every little space was efficiently used. This is the kind of thing I like to do, over time, as I use a boat.
For that reason I prefer to buy old boats (used to be old cars) in neglected but reasonably 'stock' condition. I'm putting the Vega back together in her original configuration. Over 3300 were built (mine is #1331) and I love the layout. All storage areas are very easily accessed.

I'm slowly upgrading things like thru-hulls, plumbing, and wiring, and re-finishing all the interior sapelle woodwork ... not trying to make it new ... just 35-year-old beautiful!
