Fairing putty for gel coat

Post by Ryan »

Can anyone reccommend a fairing putty for use with gel coat? I have several small dings and gouges to repair and I need to fill them with a putty mixture prior to gel coating. I would use my standard epoxy filler, but it's dark color and small pinholes make me think there is something better for white gel coat. Suggestions?

You can use gel coat thickened with colloidal silica (406 if you use West filler). Build up coats thickened then not as required to over fill, then sand out and eventually compound and buff. The hard part is matching your slightly discolored old gel coat. That part is an art, not a science.
