Problems with "recoring my deck"

Post by vindo40 »

After reading a little bit about different materials used to recore, I selected the honeycomb "Nida-Core".
Now my problems started when I went to buy it at my local "Fiberglass Coatings Inc" store and the people there told me that this material doesn't have enough stiffness for a deck.
The old balsa was 3/8" and I know that "balsa" has a better density than Nida-Core but I really don't want to use it. The same thickness in a Nida-Core has 5 lb. density.
Now they gave me the alternative of :
- Divinycell H-80 / 3/8" but has the same 5 lb. of density or
-Nyloboard / 3/8" has 25 lb. of density but the problem it is very heavy even heavier than plywood.
I was thinking to put 2 layer of 17 oz. biaxial cloth with stitched mat backing on top.

My question is: If I use the NIDA-CORE will I be compromising the stiffness of the deck?
Did anybody have this experience in recore with Honeycomb?
All comments count, thanks.

I imagine someone who has direct experience will come along, but, to tide you over, this link has a few short articles from people who used Nida core to re-core Triton decks:

http://tritonclass.org/mir/nidacore.html

I know of some good boats that have Divinycell decks (Hallberg Rassy, etc.), but I don't specifically know of any with Nida core decks (I do know of powerboat hardtops cored with it).

However, my experience with either is so limited that I would not have responded if I hadn't been going to post the link above.
